Geodesy and Cartography
Session Chair Person: Prof. PhD.eng. Gh.Nistor, Prof.Johan Neuner
It is my pleasure to welcome you to our Symposium, GEOMAT 2013, on behalf of the Organising Committee.
This symposium is being organized on the occasion of the bicentennial celebration of the foundation of the technical and engineering education in Romanian, at the same time being meant as a commemoration of the personality of the great founder of Romanian education and culture, Gheorghe Asachi. His essential contribution was expressed in the royal decree of November 15-th, 1813, by which The School of Cadastral Science and Engineering within the Royal Academy of Iaşi was founded. This historical moment symbolizes the act of birth of the entire technical and engineering higher education in Romanian.
Gheorghe Asachi was appointed the only professor within the Royal Academy, where he taught a course of lectures in theoretical mathematics, with practical applications in geodetics and architecture, as well as studies in analysing and solving cadastral documents issues. The first class of cadastral engineers had 32 students, who passed their graduation examination on June 12, 1818. The graduation festivity was accompanied by an exhibition of topographical maps, architectural and fortification projects made by the school’s graduates. The final examination, in Asachi’s opinion, „was the first triumph of education in the mother tongue”.
All these moments of cherished remembrance will be integrated in the symposium through the exhibition of documents and projects dating back in the period of Gheorghe Asachi’s engineering school, made available for public display in collaboration with the county office of the Romanian National Archives.
We hope that the scientific works presented in the panels (in the areas of Geodesy and Cartography; Engineering Geodetic Measurements; Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing; Cadastre and Real Estate Publicity; Real Estate Valuation; Geographic Information Systems) will significantly contribute to improving scientific knowledge in geodetics and geomatics.
We wish you all a very pleasant stay in Iasi and a successful and interesting Symposium, which should bring new highlights, information and ideas to all of you.
